LSU LAW STUDENTS CONTINUE TRADITION WITH CHARITY FOOTBALL GAME

Who said football season is over with?  The students from LSU Law School will once again put down the law books and don their shoulder pads, helmets, and pom-poms to raise money for charity in the upcoming Barrister’s Bowl XIV.

The game, which kicks off Saturday, February 24th, at 12:30pm at BREC’s Memorial Stadium, is the result of the hard work, time, and effort put in by the LSU Law Football Club and its Co-Commissioners, Nick Parham and Brady McMillin, as well as Cheerleading Captains, Meghan Trahan, Brooklee Hurst, and Hillary Brouillette.  After the passing in 2015 of vice chancellor, dean, and longtime professor, Cheney Joseph who succumbed to cancer, the Football Club made a decision to focus on cancer-related charities for the proceeds from their annual game.  Dean Joseph was one of greatest supporters of the Barrister’s Bowl and his presence is greatly missed.  This year the Co-Commissioners and Cheerleader Captains decided to donate to Geaux Teal, a Baton Rouge area charity focused on ovarian cancer awareness, treatment, and patient services.

After a successful event last year that raised over $9,000 for the American Cancer Society, the LSU Law Football Club decided to focus their donation efforts on locally-based cancer charities.  Geaux Teal is a charity started by LSU Softball Coach Beth Torina and the Club has set a goal of raising $10,000 for donation this year.  The mission of Geaux Teal is especially significant to Co-Commissioner, Nick Parham, who lost his mother to ovarian cancer in 2015, “After attending Geaux Teal’s fundraising walk last year, I was very inspired by the work they do and I know our donation will do a lot of good for our community.”

A big thanks goes out to our volunteer referees and volunteer services from Acadian Ambulance.  Gold-level sponsors: Campus Federal; attorney Frank Holthaus; Coastal Gulf and International, Inc.; Uncle Earl’s Bar; Fred’s Bar; and Taco Bell.  Silver-level sponsors: Stutes & Lavergne, LLC; Watson, McMillin & Street, LLP; and Hotworx. Bronze-level sponsors: Bayou DeSiard Title Company, LLP; Tech-Con Systems; and Taylor, Porter, Brooks & Phillips, LLP.  Additional thanks goes out to Scotlandville Magnet High School (Baton Rouge) who generously donated equipment. Without these and other sponsors, the tradition could not continue.

After snapping Gold’s four-year winning streak last year, Purple has pulled ahead in the rivalry, 7-6. Purple will look to begin their own winning streak, while Gold hopes to avenge their loss from last year’s game.
