BRBA: Tell us about your education.
B.S. in Construction Management with a minor in Business from LSU (2007) - J.D. from Southern University Law Center (2015). I'm licensed as a FINRA General Securities Representative, NASAA Uniform Combined State Law Representative, and I am a Life, Accident, Health, Sickness, Variable Life, and Variable Annuity Producer.
BRBA: Where are you from?
Born and raised in Baton Rouge. I attended Our Lady of Mercy, Catholic High, LSU, and SULC.
BRBA: Where and what type of law do you practice?
Prior to joining UBS as a Financial Advisor, I practiced in estate planning, trusts, mergers and acquisitions, and real estate. I now utilize that legal experience to deliver comprehensive wealth management with a focus on Trusts, Wealth Transfer Strategies, including business succession planning, life transition planning, and retirement planning. I still speak as an educational instructor for CLEs regarding Special Needs Trusts.
BRBA: Why did you want to become an attorney?
I grew up with an entrepreneurial spirit. The further I got into business, the more I realized I had to be be well versed in law. It became clear that being a licensed attorney was a necessity for me.
BRBA: If you were not practicing law, what would be your alternate profession?
I maintain my license, but I do not actively practice law. Instead, I use my legal knowledge to assist clients and their attorneys to achieve their goals through financial and estate planning. I collaborate with many attorneys to further assist their clients in wealth preservation through estate planning and trust solutions through settlements, judgements, mergers and acquisitions. Therefore, their clients have a viable financial plan that works with the legal strategies their attorneys apply.
BRBA: What is one thing you wish you would have known before you went to law school?
I wish I had known to take as many electives as possible. When I went to law school, I had the mindset to focus on business, real estate, and estate planning. After graduating law school and studying for the bar, I began to think of how wonderful it would have been to take every elective available. As a young attorney, it is great to have as many tools in your belt as possible. Obtaining a proficient law education only broadens your capabilities.
BRBA: Are you involved with the BRBA? If so, how?
I am a Belly Up Committee Member and frequent the Young Lawyer events.
BRBA: What motivated you to become involved with the BRBA?
I joined BRBA upon graduating and started to attend the YLD events. It is a great way to meet the other young attorneys who are going through their first years of practice. Additionally, it is an opportunity to meet seasoned members and mentors.
BRBA: What is your favorite BRBA activity or event?
Belly Up with the Bar is by far my favorite event. Often, Louisiana's culture revolves around food. What is a better way to pass a good time than a friendly cook off that benefits the Bar Foundation's youth education programs?!
BRBA: Are you involved with any other organizations or causes?
I am a member of Friends Helping Kids, Inc. which puts on a free camp every summer for children with special needs. I am also a member for the Sigma Phi Epsilon Alumni Board LA Beta Chapter, the American Bar Association, Greater Baton Rouge Association of Realtors, and Ducks Unlimited.
BRBA: What is the best piece of advice you have received?
You are who you surround yourself with. Be sure to surround yourself with good people.
BRBA: What are your leisure activities?
I'm an outdoorsman, so I enjoy hunting and fishing. I enjoy Louisiana football. My fiancé and I love to travel and try different foods. Most of our time is spent with our families and friends, which includes our dogs.
BRBA: What is the last book that you read?
Rich Man Poor Man by Irwin Shaw
BRBA: Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I'm very versatile out of the office. I still use my construction skills by working on houses and building furniture. I enjoy tinkering with old cars. Lastly, I still walk a lot of properties trying to envision development plans.
