Maya Guntz Flowers
Gordon McKernan Injury Attorneys
Areas of practice:
100% Personal Injury
Favorite BRBA project or event:
Arts Judicata-I'm on the committee, it's a new event this year that's completely different than anything I've seen previously done. We've got some very talented barristers hiding in Baton Rouge so this is going to be FUN!
In life, my cousin Viola Taylor, she was the first African-American to vote in Livingston Parish and she fought so hard for that right that it inspires me to this day. In the law, I'd definitely say my teacher and Professors Renee Chatelain, Jacqueline Nash Grant, Russel Jones, and Timothy Hardy. Their education has never stopped because I still call on them years outside of the classroom!
The part of my job I do best is:
Negotiations, I will fight for every cent a client deserves, down to the penny. There is no greater feeling than placing a check in the hand of someone who has struggled due to the actions of another.
What most people don't know about me:
20% of my bones and joints are metal; I'm literally bionic.
Lawyers with egos and social media attorneys who confuse google with a JD.
Best thing about being a lawyer:
I get paid to read, write and argue! For a nerd like me, it doesn't get any better than that!
Favorite food or restaurant:
Empire Wings right outside of Southern University's campus. I love buffalo wings!
If I had more time, I would:
Dance professionally; I actually turned down opportunity to dance with Beyonce in New Orleans a few years ago because I had an appellate brief due.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself?
We have two eyes and two ears but one mouth for a reason. Listen and observe twice as much as you speak. Oh, and when you get the chance to be a dancer for Beyonce, DANCE FOR BEYONCE!
What volunteer efforts do you support?
The Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Program at the Southern University Law Center. The program has law students teach Criminal Procedure and Con Law to local high school students in Baton Rouge. I taught in the program when I was in school and one of my former students graduated from the law center last year. Gordon Gives -- it's my firm's community outreach, we do everything from giveaway bikes and car seats to sponsor community events and local terms.
Most important career lesson:
The law is a jealous mistress; don't let her run your life!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
