Southern University Law Center's John K. Pierre chosen to receive the 2012 LSBA Crystal Gavel Award 


John K. Pierre, a member of the Baton Rouge Bar Association, was recently selected to receive the Louisiana Bar Association’s 2012 Crystal Gavel Award. Pierre is a professor of law and the vice chancellor for Institutional Accountability and Evening Division at the Southern University Law Center (SULC). The award recognizes lawyers and judges who have continuously contributed to the community.


Pierre received his J.D. from the Southern Methodist University Law Center.


Before joining the SULC faculty, he was a visiting and adjunct professor at California State University, Southern Methodist University School of Law, Loyola University Law School, Southern University College of Business, Saint Leo’s College, Webster University, Louisiana State University and Baton Rouge Community College.


His strong background in tax accounting created his passion for helping families learn about and achieve financial stability. He has established a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program site that is hosted by the Low-Income Taxpayer Law Clinic at SULC. He has also established an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Day each year at SULC with the goal to assist those in need with tax preparation issues.


Pierre is a member of the American Bar Association, National Bar Association, Louisiana State Bar Association and Texas Bar Association.
