Mary H. Thompson

Attorney at Law

Areas of practice:

Medical malpractice defense, general liability, health care law.

Favorite BRBA project:

H. Alston Johnson III's annual legislative update.

Best advice:

"You need a profession." That was from my husband. Second best: " Document everything."

The part of my job I do best:

Meeting with witnesses.

Family:

Husband, two grown sons (one is a surgeon in Atlanta and married to a brilliant reproductive endocrinologist, and one is a business consultant in Chicago); two brilliant grandchildren; two unwaveringly loving dogs.

Latest pursuit:

Fly fishing. It is wonderful!

Pet peeve:

Poor grammar.

Best law school memory:

Graduation. A politician from Arkansas named Bill Clinton was the speaker. He was a friend of Alston Johnson.

If I could be anyone else for a day . . .

Hmmm. Bill Gates.

Favorite food or restaurant:

Crawfish.

Favorite Baton Rouge location:

Home.

Little known fact:

I was the first voting student member on the LSU Board of Supervisors. We had to get a constitutional amendment passed to make the student position have a vote.

Turning point:

See best advice above.

If I had more time, I would:

Write a novel and include some of the wacky things that have happened over more than 30 years as a lawyer in Baton Rouge.

Community involvement:

First Christian Church, Capital Area CASA, Gaitway therapeutic horsemanship.

Culinary talent:

We recently put in an outdoor kitchen and I am loving doing anything on the grill or in the smoker.

Begin my workday:

Sorting out the day while the dogs take me on my morning walk.
